As several of you have noted, there has been an adjustment in how we post and price our products. The prices haven't changed, it's just streamlined to make it easy for you, the customer to know what you are paying. 

Old Method
Sale Price - $3.25/lb HCW
Processing Fees - $0.60/lb HCW 
Slaughter and Transportation Fee - $50 (average weight of 300 lbs)
$3.25 + $0.60 + $0.16 = $4.01/lb

New Method
Sale Price - $4.00/lb HCW
Processing Fees, Slaughter and Transportation Fee - included

The adjustments on the additional fees when dealing with halves is due to the extra work that has to be completed. Additional invoices, cut sheets, and delivery/pick ups all create additional time spent. With the increase in products produced and demand, we have to make sure that we are covering our time investments as well. 

We recommend ordering whole animals when possible as a cost savings to you. 

Hopefully this will decrease any confusion when ordering and make it easier on everyone.

January has been one of those months that has flown by in a flurry of activity! There have been lots of changes in more than the temperamental NY weather.

This month, two alpacas found a new home here at the farm. It was a rough transition to getting them here at the farm, with lots of ups and down. Transporting animals is always a rough thing but when people can't find a common ground, it always creates chaos. We all managed to slug our way through and on January 13th, they arrived!

Remington (white) and Hunter (brown) are both males. They will be sheared around Mother's Day for their super soft, hypo-allergenic, warmer than wool fleece. The thought of that fleece in the dead cold of winter makes me dream of the most beautifully soft and cozy afghan. 
They are already a big hit with visitors, whether it's for their fuzzy heads or their humming purrs or maybe it might even be the tickles of their little camel like noses as they nibble grain from your hand I'm not sure.

Now today, we have new piglets that have arrived in a much less dramatic fashion that the Nor'easter storm that blew in over night. In three hours time, they were born and completely dry! They are currently all doing well. I'll keep a close eye on them for the first weeks of their lives, which will be such a great pleasure to watch them learning the world around them. It's my favorite part of having pigs, especially once they learn to give kisses and to zip around and play.

BEEF:
For February, there are a couple of appointments upcoming for available beef. There are a  total of 3 heading off to freezer camp, with some still available. Anyone purchasing a half or greater gets their choice of cuts to select after a deposit is received. The first available pick up date is February 18th. This is the last of the available beef until finishing of the next batch around September. Grilling season is coming soon here locally and we don't want you to miss out.

Hogs and Pork:
There is also secured a date for the end of April for pork as well. The reviews have been sent in from the last batch and everyone is extremely pleased with their bacon, hams, sausage and even commented about the juiciness of the pork chops. Deposits will need to be secured as quickly as possible, since orders are already coming in! These animals are 100% raised from farrow to fork, right here on Barrows Farm.
To those interested in raising their own pork, the new piglets born today will be offered as feeder hogs at weaning. They will be 8-10 weeks old and will be available the end of March, first part of April. If anyone is interested, they can also be secured for those pig roasts this coming summer.
I'll have a confirmation of availability next posting. 

Calving Season:
There will be 19 calves to be born this coming April and May! Hard to believe that just a few short years ago there were just 3 or 4.
